Even though we know that Republicans are cowards and at least 4-8 will likely vote to convict Trump for impeachment, they still will lack the necessary votes to have it pass. A conviction on impeachment needs 67 total votes to be binding, and there is no way 17 Republicans are going to risk their political careers by voting for it. So now Susan Collins is working with goofy Tim Kaine on a backup plan, and that’s to censure Trump. Normally censure doesn’t bar someone from running for office, but little known Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, a rarely cited Civil War-era provision which allows Congress to bar individuals from holding office if they have “engaged in insurrection.”
Unlike impeachment conviction, this just needs a simple majority to pass the Senate. You got 50 communist Democrats plus Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Ben Sasse. There would be enough votes for it to pass if it came to that.
