An Indianapolis councilor and pastor is responding to allegations that he molested a teenage boy some 15 years ago. Those allegations are re-surfacing just before the council elects its new president, Monday, January 8.
The Rev. Stephen Clay, pastor of Messiah Missionary Baptist Church and a Democratic councilor said there’s no truth to the allegations, and claimed they’re being fanned “in part, if not solely” by current council president Maggie Lewis.
In a statement released late Tuesday afternoon, Lewis said she “learned of the allegations at the same time as the rest of the community,” and feels it’s “an unfortunate situation for all parties involved.”
The alleged victim said his decision to come forward has nothing to do with politics. Jonathan Bryant, who now lives in Savannah, Georgia, said it’s about him feeling emboldened to speak out in light of the Me Too movement and letting people know what he says happened to him as a young teen.
“I realize what he did to me was predatory and premeditated,” Bryant said.
