The Cedric Bartee shooting happened at the Timber Sound apartment complex and involved a call about a stolen Honda Accord in Orlando.
The driver, identified as Cedric Bartee, 28, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. He is in critical condition following surgery, authorities said.
The passenger in the car, Henry Chaney, 28, was arrested.
The deputy was later identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Sgt. Robert McCarthy, who has been with the department since 2007.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
Witnesses at the apartment complex said the men had their hands up when the deputy opened fire.
