A Chicago man is charged with sending a series of letters over a one-year period threatening to rape and murder Southern Illinois University students and blow up campus buildings.
Derrick Dawon Burns, 21, was arrested Monday in Chicago after a Sept. 25 criminal complaint was unsealed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, court officials said in a statement.
According to an affidavit filed in the case, a total of seven letters containing the same distinctive handwriting were addressed to SIU in Carbondale between September 2012 and September 2013.
At least one of the letters contained a bomb threat that prompted officials at the downstate Carbondale campus to evacuate 2,100 students from three dormitory towers in the middle of the night in September 2012, according to court records and published reports. No explosive device was ever found.
