John Burton, the state Democratic Party chairman, said Boxer has not told him what she will do, but he gave a clue at a Democratic Party fundraiser held Thursday night in San Francisco, the Chronicle reports. Noting that Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris–both possible replacements should Boxer step down–were in the audience, Burton informed the gathering, “When we meet here four years from tonight, we could be looking at one California governor and one U.S. senator.”Other prospective candidates for Boxer’s seat include billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, who has pledged vast sums of money to help Democratic candidates in 2014, Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, and others.
