Does this mean that the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks and Golden State Warriors are about to lose their patents and trademarks because their names and logos are ‘disparaging of Native Americans?’
What about the state of Oklahoma? Their state name is Choctaw phrase which literally meaning red people. Surely, that must be ‘disparaging of Native Americans.’
The U.S. Patent Office ruled that the Washington Redskins name is “disparaging of Native Americans” and federal trademarks for the name have to be canceled.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder has refused to change the team’s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.Bob Raskopf, trademark attorney for the team, said he expects the ruling to be overturned on appeal.
“We’ve seen this story before,” Raskopf said in a statement. “And just like last time, today’s ruling will have no effect at all on the team’s ownership of and right to use the Redskins name and logo.”
